Lancang-Mekong Region Cooperation International Arbitration High-End Forum

On 10 November 2018, the THAC shared its proposal on cooperation between arbitral institutions for international arbitration and mediation to support the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation. The Lancang-Mekong Cooperation is a sub-regional cooperation between six riparian States along the Lancang and Mekong River. The joint institutional support for consolidating cases, making available hearing facilities, collaborating on seminars and training programs, sharing of resource persons and recommendations of arbitrators and mediators were some of the proposals shared. There was an understanding reached between the arbitral institutions from the LMC to consider a joint Memorandum of Understanding in the near future.

New York University and THAC International Arbitration Training

  On 11 – 15 June 2018, the Thailand Arbitration Center along with New York University’s Center for Transnational Litigation, Arbitration and Commercial Law organized the five-day training on international arbitration. There were two modules taught; an Introduction to International Arbitration and Procedures in International Arbitration. The faculty of instructors was led by Professor Franco Ferrari and he was joined by Dr. Friedrich Rosenfeld, Samuel Seow, David Holloway and Vanina Sucharitkul. All the candidates successfully passed the training and received their certificates of completion.

1st International ADR Conference at the Dusit Thani

On 17 and 18 May 2018, the Thailand Arbitration Center along with UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific jointly organized the 1st International ADR Conference at the Dusit Thani Hotel with 300 persons in attendance. This marked the first of this annual flagship Conference for a comprehensive discussion on alternative dispute resolution (ADR). This year, there was a focus on identifying new opportunities for legal convergence to produce a more robust and predictable cross-border regime for arbitration, mediation and online dispute resolution within the Greater Mekong Subregion and beyond. The Greater Mekong Subregion lends itself to fostering internal trade and linkages outward to the wider economic initiatives of the Belt and Road and development of Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor. Thailand is central to the Greater Mekong Subregion in connecting the region and attracting further trade and investment. It was an honor to have ACM Prajin Juntong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Thailand, give the opening remarks and for Anna Joubin-Bret, Secretary for UNCITRAL and Director of the Division on International Trade Law, deliver the keynote address. Leading experts in the field of arbitration and mediation also shared their deep knowledge on a variety of topics from reform to investor-State dispute resolution to the strengthening of international mediation

Signing Ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between Thailand Arbitration Center (THAC) and International institute for Trade and Development (ITD)

The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Thailand Arbitration Center (“THAC”) and International institute for Trade and Development (“ITD”) was held on 30 April 2018 at Thailand Arbitration Center. Mr. Pasit Asawawattanaporn, THAC Managing Director, and Dr. Kamalinne Pinitpuvadol, Executive Director of ITD, signed the MoU on behalf of THAC and ITD. This MoU signals a strengthening of the ties between both institutions. The purpose of this Memorandum of Understanding is to provide the framework for partnership arrangement between THAC and ITD ensuring close cooperation and coordination of efforts concerning research, training, workshop, and seminar programmes for economic growth and development, in particular on issues related to international trade, finance, investment, energy, development and in other relevant areas. Under the MoU, both institutes intend to exchanging of personnel as resource persons and visiting research fellows and exchanging of information including but not limited to, exchange of permitted academic materials and research publications.
