“Child-Kicking Monk” Has Apologized. Mother just wants justice for her child.
A monk has come out and admitted to his offense, in the case where he had requested a boy who was playing in that area to buy him some larb (spicy minced meat salad). However, the boy refused because his motorcycle was low on gasoline and the weather was hot. This caused frustration to the monk in which he scolded the boy before kicking him in the face.
The latest development on this case, on March 23, 2021, Ms. Premrat, aged 41, together with her son, Mr. B (a pseudonym), aged 16, filed charges with Pol. Maj. Kanok Wangjaifoo, the investigation inspector at Koh Kha Police Station, Koh Kha District, Lampang Province. She claimed that on March 20, 2021, her son was kicked in the face by Phra Maha Kampanat, who is one of the monks currently staying at a temple in the village because her son refused to go out to buy larb. After the incident, Phra Maha Kampanat offered no apologies or made no attempt to contact the victim’s family. He only sent a representatives to negotiate on his behalf, but both parties could not reach an agreement. In addition, the abbot of the temple ordered that the monk to temporarily leave the temple and return to his original abode.
Mr. B., the damaged party, and the novice monks that were present at the incident, testified that after refusing to buy Laab for Phra Maha Kampanat, the monk appeared very dissatisfied before walking down from his cubicle and scolded the boy and eventually jumped up and kicked the boy until the boy fell over backwards. Chaos ensued which also caused the boy to be scratched in several places on his body, including bruises on the neck, arms, and eye sockets.
When the police accepted the case, both parties were invited to give their testimonies and mediate. The abbot of the temple accompanied Phra Maha Kampanat to the station to meet with the investigating officer. Preliminarily, the accused monk admitted that he had actually kicked the boy in the face. About an hour after both sides gave their testimonies, Phra Maha Kampanat came out to give a short interview that, “everything has been settled and both sides have come to an agreement. I have already apologized to the boy through his mother. The other party did not request for any compensations, and I have already been fined by the police”.
While on the mother’s side, she said that, “the monk has already apologized, even though it came a bit too late. I admit that now I have already calmed down and did not file for any damages. Even if he offers some, I would not accept it. Because the reason for filing charges was not to demand for any money, but just wanted protection and demand justice for my son”.
Nevertheless, Ms. Premrat, the mother of the child also concluded that, “I want to send a message to the monks, that belongs to the clergy and should exercise more restraint, because after you’ve done something, it’s hard to retract on what you have done. From what I’ve head, the monk supervising the sub-district ruler has ordered for the offending monk to return to his original temple which is located at another village in order to minimize any conflict”.
