US harsh criticism on China’s new coast guard law that it “intimidates” neighbor countries.
The new maritime law or coastguard bill of China that passed last month became a hot topic when Washington Government had criticized that the new china law is “intimidate” the neighboring countries amid the maritime sovereignty disputes, especially in the South China Sea.
Reported from the international news agency in Washington DC, USA, on 20 February 2021, State Department spokesman Ned Price made a statement during the regular Friday briefing that “Washington was concerned by the new maritime law or coastguard bill of China that enacted last month which contains language that could “intimidate” the neighbor countries amid the maritime disputes, especially in the South China Sea where the international arbitrator had already rendered an award in 2016.”

According to the new maritime law or the coastguard bill, the coastguard is allowed to use “all necessary means within the scope of the law,” which including “using weapons” when China’s sovereignty, security, or maritime rights is“violated” by foreign vessels or personnel in claimed waters areas.
The bill also “legally” authorized the coastguard to demolish other countries’ structures built on Chinese-claimed reefs and islands “under China’s sovereignty”. It also allows the coastguard to board and pressure foreign vessels in waters claimed by China to retreat from the area. Price said, “the US reaffirmed its standpoint in which the Beijing Government’s claim over most of the South China Sea area is ‘completely unlawful’ ”.
